Concordance (Main text: Genesis chapter 44)
You can run but can't hide, brothers.
Joseph's
brothers were between devil and deep blue sea as they encountered another
problem with Joseph. After the merriments they had with Joseph, their joy was short-lived
as Joseph's messenger rode to stop his brothers for another issue. Joseph's
silver cup was missing and all sacks had to be searched. The silver cup was
found in Benjamin's sack. Do you think Benjamin actually stole Joseph's silver
cup? No. To bible readers, they have already known this. However, let us
discuss why Joseph had to do this.
Oops! the cup is in my sack.
Joseph
had been a Hollywood star by putting on an act to get to know the minds of his
brothers concerning Benjamin. He also wanted to know whether they are changed
people or not. Instead of Simeon he held back in the previous chapter, he chose
to indict Benjamin to see the reactions of his elder brothers.
When
Benjamin's brothers found that the stolen silver cup was found in Benjamin's
sack, they were very sad. They all decided to go back with Benjamin (who was
arrested for the crime) to the land of Egypt. Why should it matter? Joseph's
brothers had turned a new leave, but they were still old dogs with different
tricks. They thought they could run and hide with their reasonable explanations
in the presence of Joseph but they were still hiding the truth that Joseph was
turned into pieces by a wild animal. This is what they had told their father. Judah
told the truth that two sons were born to Jacob through Rachael and only
Benjamin was remaining but this was a half truth. I could imagine Joseph pretending
to have a great concern and pity on his elder brother's pleas but his brothers
did not know that they could not hide the truth from him.
The only thing I believe Joseph found interesting is the fact that Judah came forward to tell Joseph that he had vowed to his father (Jacob) to watch over Benjamin in the land of Egypt. Judah added that he did not want to go and face his father with sad news that Benjamin has been held back in Egypt. He was afraid to see his father going into grave with heavy sadness.
Joseph saw different
brothers this time. He perceived that they were more responsible and matured in
their reasoning. The tears on the eyes of his elder brothers and how they were
throwing themselves at his feet for mercy had overwhelmed him. He was moved to
shed tears in secret.
I
believe Joseph had had enough of these dramas and episodes. He could not hide
his feelings anymore. He had to let go of the burden on his heart.
Next
chapter discusses what Joseph did. I am sure you would love to know it.
In this
world we live, can we find brotherly love again? May be this week bible chapter
will help us to rethink our ways (in relative sense). However, Yahweh was at
work on Joseph and his brothers to achieve his plans in absolute sense. Nothing
is strange to him.
Please,
leave your comments and be nice with them.
Shalom.
Praise be to Yahweh.
