Hello my blog readers. I pray that
this week blog bless you immensely. Last week blog discusses how
Yeshua and two Angels visited Abraham to deliver good news of child birth and
their intention to visit the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. Please, go back to
series 16 for details of this blog. A lot of information is there for you to
know.
In this week, Yeshua left talking with Abraham (in
chapter 18) while the rest two Angels went to the city of Sodom and Gomorrah.
In chapter 19, Lot saw two strange men coming towards the city of Sodom and
Gomorrah, not knowing that they were the Angels sent to destroy the city. Lot demonstrated
habit of hospitality to these strangers by feeding them in his house that
night. He beckoned on them not to go to the inner city because it was not safe.
In the tone of his concern, the Angel stayed in his house. Little did Lot know
that some of men in the city of Sodom had already known that Lot had two
guests in his house as they went to Lot to let them sleep with these men! Let
me paused a little bit on this.
Can you see that sexual immorality had been occurring
since a very long time? It has been said that sexual immoralities of people of
Sodom and Gomorrah included sleeping with animals and worshiping of idols. All
these filthy habits escalated to Yahweh who knew the appropriate time to judge
these cities. These two Angels made the men who came to force their way into
Lot's house to commit sexual immorality become blind. They were not satisfied by
sleeping with Lot's two daughters but with the two (men) strangers! What an
unpleasant thing to imagine. Imagine what Yahweh would have done to this world by now just as he did to Sodom and Gomorrah.
Lot did not know the mission of these strange men until
he was informed. He was told to take as many as he could from Sodom and
Gomorrah. He was disdained by the men who pledged to marry his two daughters.
Lot's wife was also from the city of Sodom. She probably learnt little or
nothing from God whom Lot served. Lot was delaying to leave the city of Sodom
because he had a lot of investments there. He was rushed out with his wife and
two daughters. The Angels had no reason to look around the cities because they
had found out who the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were.
They told Lot and his family to leave and not to look
back. Why? I believe this is one of ways people who were condemned to judgment had been
treated. People should look away from criminals while they were being judged. This
custom happens in some cities and some prison facilities too. People would be
asked to face wall or look away whenever a prisoner/criminal is being judged or
on his way to be judged. This is what Lot's wife did not understand. She looked
back and became a pillar of salt. Her mind was still in Sodom even when her
body had left the city. Remember that she learnt little or nothing from Lot (her husband) about who Yahweh is.
If nothing had made sense to you, I hope the following truth would
do:
Ø Remember
that Abraham requested Yeshua to stop the two Angels from destroying the city
of Sodom and Gomorrah if they found 10 righteous people. According to the
comments made above, there were only 3 of them!
Ø Out
of three, one can only say one and only Lot demonstrated attitude of
hospitality. He was the only one that appeared to be "okay", if you
will.
Ø In
short, Abraham's pleads did not hold water on this chapter. The Angels would
have been right to destroy everyone, but Yahweh knew better. No one can decide
for Yahweh. He does things according to his pleasure (Rev 4:11).
You see, no one
is righteous (Romans 3:10-11). Only Yahweh is. Our righteousness is like filthy
rag (Isaiah 64:6). If you think Lot and his family were saved based on their
righteousness think again. None of them was righteous but Yahweh showed them mercy! Remember that Yahweh is
sovereign. He can do whatever he likes. In this chapter, he decided to destroy
the city of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sins. He could have sent Lot to
tell them about him, but probably Lot was not Abraham. He only limited his
faith to himself. He was not sent to do so. Lot was Lot. He only received mercy
of Yahweh despite who Lot was. Lot was only saved not because he was nice but
because Yahweh had compassion on him.
In conclusion, we
should continue to depend on the mercy of Yahweh. Yahweh would always have
mercy upon who he would (Romans 9:15). That is why we should always come to the
throne of mercy to obtain his grace and mercy (Hebrews 4:16). Due to his mercy,
we have not been consumed. His mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22).
I hope you have learnt something through this week's blog.
Thanks for reading this blog.
More to come next week by the special grace of Yahweh.
Please, leave your comments and be nice with them.
Until next week, shalom!
Thanks to Yahweh for his continuous mercy.
