The Diary of an Agonized Lady (part 2) - NOT THIS KIND OF WATER

John 4:7-15

7 A certain woman of Samaria is coming to draw water. Jesus is saying to her, "Give Me a drink,"
8 for His disciples had come away into the city that they should be buying nourishment.
9 The Samaritan woman, then, is saying to Him, "How are you, being a Jew, requesting a drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews are not beholden to Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you were aware of the gratuity of God, and Who it is Who is saying to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would request Him, and He would give you living water."
11 The woman is saying to Him, "Lord, you have not even a bucket, and the well is deep. Whence, then, have you living water?
12 Not greater are you than our father Jacob, who gives us the well, and he himself drank out of it, and his sons, and what was nourished by him?"
13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who is drinking of this water will be thirsting again,
14 yet whoever may be drinking of the water which I shall be giving him, shall under no circumstances be thirsting for the eon, but the water which I shall be giving him will become in him a spring of water, welling up into life eonian."
15 The woman is saying to Him, "Lord, give me this water, that I may not be thirsting, nor yet coming to this place to draw."

From a Well of Water to a Well of Grace

John 4:9 tells us something important: Jews and Samaritans did not associate with one another. Yet Yeshua deliberately traveled into Samaritan territory because He was on a rescue mission. He wasn't there by accident. He was there to heal the heart of a broken woman who desperately needed hope.

This week's blog highlights several beautiful lessons from this encounter.

Before speaking with the woman, Yeshua sent His disciples away (John 4:8). There was a reason for this, and we'll explore it in next week's blog. For now, let's focus on the remarkable conversation between Yeshua and this Samaritan woman.

An Invitation to Talk

As Yeshua rested by Jacob's well, He simply asked the woman for a drink of water.

At first glance, it seemed like an ordinary request. But in reality, it was the beginning of a life-changing conversation.

The woman was surprised. She knew that Jews normally had nothing to do with Samaritans, so she questioned why a Jewish man would ask her for water. Yet despite her hesitation, the conversation continued.

Yeshua then redirected the discussion. Instead of focusing on the water He requested, He pointed her toward something she truly needed.

In essence, Yeshua was saying, "I am not the one who needs help—you are."

Notice the setting. He met her at a well—a place where people came to draw water. This was no coincidence. The One who called Himself the source of living water chose the perfect place to reveal who He truly is.

What Kind of Water?

Like many of us would have done, the woman thought Yeshua was talking about the physical water in the well.

She immediately pointed to the history of the well, explaining that it had been passed down from Jacob.

She completely missed His point.

I can almost imagine Yeshua smiling patiently. He didn't become frustrated. He remained calm, compassionate, and focused on helping her understand. He was cool, calm and collected.

Then He made this remarkable statement:

"If you knew the gift of God and who it is that says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." (John 4:10)

Everything changed with those words.

Awareness?

Yes. That is, it. It is key. Once you are aware of something, it becomes part of you. You are not smarter than what you are not aware of. This is where Yeshua got this lady. God’s gratuity is the gift humans are not entitled to but it was given to them. The gratuity is the salvation of humanity. The awareness of this enables you understanding of what God has done for you without your input. The awareness of God’s gratuity gives you a living water that cannot be dried for eons. Unlike ordinary water, which satisfies only for a moment, God's grace continually refreshes the heart.

I can imagine the woman becoming completely absorbed in His words, forgetting why she had come to the well in the first place.

Yeshua explained that everyone who drinks ordinary water will become thirsty again.

Isn't that true?

No matter how much water you drink today, you'll need another drink tomorrow.

Earthly things always leave us needing more. However, the living water Yeshua offers satisfies in a way nothing else can. It produces a wellspring within whoever he gives.

What does life eonian mean?

It means those who have the understanding of God’s gifts to humanity – salvation of humans through Yeshua’s crucifixion on the tree will move from death to life. They will be snatched away to be with Christ Yeshua. They will be alive during millennium reign of Christ on earth. Eonian life is a long period of time but has an end. The end of this period will usher them to the eons of eons life after God makes a new heaven and earth.

-         Bible contextual error -

Unfortunately, many bible translations incorrectly translate life eonian for everlasting life/life forever. The correct word is eon. John 3:16 mentioned that whosoever belief in Christ…This means that whoever has come to understand the gratuity of God will have life eonian. How to get this understanding is when God sends his son to you. God sent Yeshua to this heartbroken lady to get life eonian (John 6:44). By reading and hearing the word of God, the spirit of God speaks into your heart and reveal Christ's work of salvation to you. This is not an act of your freewill. It is the act of God by God himself.

You cannot come to Christ unless his father brings you to him. Many were called but few were chosen. Those who were chosen are given spiritual fruit (faith- Galatians 5:22) to be aware of the gratuity of God to humanity.

The Samaritan lady did not go looking for Yeshua. Rather, God arranged for Yeshua to meet her exactly where she was.

That meeting changed everything.

When God opens our eyes to His grace, He enables us to understand what He has accomplished for us through Christ.

The Real Heart Surgery

Yeshua's goal was never simply to quench His physical thirst.

He wanted to heal the deepest thirst in this woman's heart.

When she finally said,

"Lord, give me this water, so that I will not thirst or have to keep coming here to draw water,"

the conversation had reached the point Yeshua intended from the very beginning.

He had gently led her from what she thought she needed to what she truly needed.

And that is exactly what Yeshua still does today.

He meets people where they are, speaks into their circumstances, and lovingly leads them to the grace of God.

This was only the beginning of the story.

Next week, we'll discover how Yeshua exposed the real source of this woman's brokenness and performed what could be described as spiritual heart surgery.
